Overview
The Enhancing Digital Teaching and Learning (EDTL) project aims to mainstream digital in teaching and learning activities in Irish higher education, by addressing the professional development of all who teach or support teaching and learning.
The student population is increasing in diversity and there are demands for increased flexibility in when and how learning opportunities are provided. Digital devices and applications are ubiquitous. To respond to the changes in student population and the increasingly digital environment, educators have to develop their digital skills and adapt to more innovative teaching approaches.
This badge is designed to place you on your digital development pathway, by supporting you to reflect on your own strengths, needs and goals in the digital learning environment, as well as those of your students. Using a pedagogy-first approach, you will identify some key areas for personal development in the digital space and use structured tools for planning technology-based learning activities.
You’ll Learn to
- Reflect on how you currently use technology to support your teaching (or support student learning) and identify any areas where digital technologies could be used to enhance your teaching.
- Acquire (and demonstrate) a digital skill that will support your teaching practice.
- Plan a new or enhanced teaching activity that makes best use of technology for your context.
- Plan how you will evaluate the success of the new activity.
On earning your open badge award for this course, you will have achieved further recognition in the following domains of the National Professional Development Framework for Staff who Teach:
- Domain 1 The Self At the core of the domains is the centrality of ‘the Self’, recognising that the professional and personal values that the individual brings to their teaching are pivotal in their development as a teacher.
- Domain 2 Professional Identity, Values and Development in Teaching and Learning focuses on the consideration of professional and/or disciplinary identity in given contexts. The domain supports critical reflection, recognising that an individual’s professional identity can change at different stages of their career.
- Domain 3 Professional Communication and Dialogue emphasises the importance of excellent, clear and coherent communication skills within the changing learning environment.
- Domain 4 Professional Knowledge and Skills ensures the individual remains current in terms of their professional/disciplinary knowledge and can implement teaching, learning and assessment approaches which promote active learning and are underpinned by a strong evidence base.
- Domain 5 Personal and Professional Digital Capacity recognises explicitly that we live and work in a digital world, and that teachers must develop digital skills that allow them to harness the potential of technology for learning impact.

Enrollment
This open course is offered in two different versions of study, facilitator led or self-study.
Facilitator-led courses run at different times throughout the year and result in a digital badge. Some are entirely online, some are blended, and others face-to-face. Additional facilitator training may be provided so that you can later facilitate your own open course.
