Overview

This course supports students in developing the key academic writing skills needed for success in higher education. It introduces the foundations of academic writing, including reading and note-taking, structuring assignments, critical analysis, referencing, and report writing.

Through a series of focused units, you will build your ability to communicate ideas clearly, engage critically with sources, and apply appropriate academic writing conventions. The course also covers essential areas such as avoiding plagiarism and improving grammar, punctuation and spelling.

By completing the units and associated activities, you will develop the confidence and skills needed to approach academic writing effectively across your studies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and reflect on common academic writing challenges and apply strategies to overcome them
  • Recognise different forms of academic writing and their purposes
  • Identify key academic writing conventions, including style, structure and tone
  • Recognise and use appropriate resources to support academic writing

Course Developers
