Looking to increase your understanding and embedding of Universal Design (UD) strategically within your organisation? The Universal Design for Senior Leaders in Tertiary Education course provides tertiary leaders with a framework to strategically embed universal design and for the adoption and implementation of ALTITUDE – the National Charter for Universal Design in Tertiary Education. For the purpose of this course, a senior leader in tertiary education is a decision-maker and influencer of practice within further education and higher education. These strategic leaders drive and manage system-level enhancements to build institutions of educational excellence that reflect national strategy and policy.

The course will support you to explore your role and responsibilities in embedding a whole systems approach to universal design implementation through strategy, policy, practice and governance across all areas of function within your organisation. The course is a free introductory course on Universal Design for Senior Leaders working in Higher and Further Education and Training in the Republic of Ireland.  In this context senior leaders in tertiary education are considered to be decision-makers and influencers of practice within further education and higher education. Participants explore how leadership decisions, institutional strategies, policies and practices can widen access, participation, and belonging , enabling and empowering learners and staff to realise their potential and succeed.

The course is a self-paced online course that in total will take approximately three hours that you can move through the course at different intervals that suits your schedule without losing track of progress.

The Digital Badge is optional and consists of four units being completed and reflected on and Reflections submitted.

The programme and content is very practical and flexible. Case studies from around the country provide innovative and creative ways to enhance services & supports, communications & interactions, and systems & processes for all users.

  • Engage with definitions and theory of UD inclusive of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Enhance your capacity to strategically implement UD inclusive of UDL within the context of legislative, policy and funding frameworks.
  • Engage with exemplars to enhance, inform, and apply UD inclusive of UDL within your organisation.
  • Augment and support your strategic commitment to UD inclusive of UDL through engagement with identified resources and optional digital badge.

On earning your open badge award for this course, you will have achieved further recognition in the following domains of the National Professional Development Framework for Staff who Teach:

  • Domain 1: The ‘Self’ in Teaching and Learning: Focuses on reflecting on personal values, motivations, and experiences.
  • Domain 2: Professional Identity, Values and Development: Explores professional/disciplinary identity and its evolution within teaching contexts.
  • Domain 3 Professional Communication and Dialogue: Emphasizes communication, collaboration, and dialogue through various media.
  • Domain 4 Professional Knowledge and Skills: Covers evidence-based teaching, assessment, and maintaining up-to-date disciplinary knowledge.
  • Domain 5 Personal and Professional Digital Capacity: Focuses on developing digital skills and confidence to harness technology for learning impact.
