Reflective Practice in Teaching

Overview

The purpose of this course is to support and develop the reflective practice of educators who are teaching in further and higher education; successful completion of the course leads to the award of an Open Course badge in ‘Reflective Practice in Teaching’.

Reflection can be formal or informal and is considered a key part of the experiential learning process where it is encouraged in both teachers and students alike to identify and maximise learning. Reflective practice is now an integral part of an educator’s professional development, whether it is self-reflection or the facilitation of reflection in students.  Participation in this Open Course will provide a digital badge and an introductory foundation for further development of reflective practice.

This course is of value for educators in further and higher education, and others involved in any aspect of education, including teaching, management and a wide variety of support services.  The participatory/practical emphasis of this course in a supported environment will enable educators initiate or progress their personal professional development journey.

You’ll Learn to

  • Identify the purposes and benefits of reflection.
  • Describe and explore different methods for capturing reflections and select a method that suits their context.
  • Distinguish between descriptive and critical reflection and identify the benefits of critical reflection. ​
  • Compare different models of reflection to inform a personalised plan for developing sustainable reflective habits.

On earning your open badge award for this course, you will have achieved further recognition in the following domains of the National Professional Development Framework for Staff who Teach:

  • Domain 1 The Self At the core of the domains is the centrality of ‘the Self’, recognising that the professional and personal values that the individual brings to their teaching are pivotal in their development as a teacher.
  • Domain 2 Professional Identity, Values and Development in Teaching and Learning focuses on the consideration of professional and/or disciplinary identity in given contexts. The domain supports critical reflection, recognising that an individual’s professional identity can change at different stages of their career.
  • Domain 4 Professional Knowledge and Skills ensures the individual remains current in terms of their professional/disciplinary knowledge and can implement teaching, learning and assessment approaches which promote active learning and are underpinned by a strong evidence base.
