Online Course: Getting Started with Personal & Professional Digital Capacity

May 23, 2022 - September 9, 2022

23 May – 2 September (All Participants) | 5 – 9 September (To complete Facilitator training)

The National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education are delighted to announce that the fully online Getting Started with Personal & Professional Digital Capacity Open Course will run this summer in partnership with the IUA-led Enhancing Digital Teaching and Learning (EDTL) project team.

Following a successful rollout in late 2021, the course has been reviewed and revised, and will be offered in a highly flexible mode, over an extended time period, during the summer.

What: This 6 unit course is designed to place you on your digital development pathway, by supporting you to reflect on your own strengths, needs and goals in the digital learning environment, as well as those of your students. Using a pedagogy-first approach, you will identify some key areas for personal development in the digital space and use structured tools for planning technology-based learning activities.

Available to: Staff currently working in Higher Education or Further Education and Training in the Republic of Ireland. Places allocated on a first come first served basis. Participants should be teaching or in a role that supports student learning, where it is possible to plan and evaluate a digital teaching enhancement.

When: The course will launch on Monday 23 May, and will support participants to engage in their own time over the summer months, with a deadline for completion in early September. This will give all participants an opportunity to develop and practice news skills, and to plan a digital teaching enhancement for the new academic year.

For those who wish to complete the facilitator training, this will take place in the week of 5 September.

Workload and Format: The workload for the course is 25 learner hours, plus 5 for the facilitator training. There will be three scheduled synchronous webinars, which will be recorded for anybody who can’t join live.

Date (week of)
23 May Welcome webinar and introduction to Unit 1
30 May Webinar introducing Units 2 & 3
20 June Webinar introducing Units 4 & 5

The main content of the course (Units 1-5) will be introduced within the first 5 weeks, and participants can spread the workload across the summer to suit their own schedule and commitments, with a deadline for completion of 5 September.

Note: The course is designed to support reflection on your own strengths, needs and goals in the digital learning environment, and to identify key areas for development in the digital space. It is light in content and does not provide technical training, but rather imparts a structure for individual exploration and development.

Facilitators: the course will be facilitated by members of the EDTL project team and by facilitators who completed the training in the first rollout of the course.
